Исследователи из Европейского центра ядерных исследований – знаменитого CERN заявили в понедельник, что обнаружили распад частицы на две других в Большом адронном коллайдере (БАК). Это прорыв, который может иметь решающее значение для определения границ между физикой и научной фантастикой.

Два протона, сталкиваясь в БАК, создали несколько других частиц - в том числе, Bs мезон, распавшийся на мюон-антимюонную пару.

Квазары помогли астрономам в изучении барионных осцилляций

Ученые из коллаборации BOSS (Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey, Спектроскопический обзор барионных осцилляций) опубликовали результаты изучения темной энергии с помощью барионных акустических осцилляций. Статья исследователей подана в журнал Astronomy and Astrophysics, а ее препринт доступен на сайте arXiv.org.

Главная цель коллаборации BOSS - изучение так называемых барионных акустических осцилляций. Это акустические волны, образовавшиеся вскоре после рождения Вселенной, которые, как считается, отвечают за неравномерное распределение материи в космосе, а также анизотропию реликтового излучения.

In the evolutionary long run, small critters tend to evolve into bigger beasts-at least according to the idea attributed to paleontologist Edward Cope, now known as Cope's Rule. Using the latest advanced statistical modeling methods, a new test of this rule as it applies dinosaurs shows that Cope was right-sometimes.

"For a long time, dinosaurs were thought to be the example of Cope's Rule," says Gene Hunt, curator in the Department of Paleobiology at the National Museum of Natural History (NMNH) in Washington, D.C. Other groups, particularly mammals, also provide plenty of classic examples of the rule, Hunt says.

Huge eruption adds new perspective to past climate

Scientists have found matching traces of a giant prehistoric volcanic eruption in ice cores from Greenland and Antarctica. The discovery sharpens our understanding of past climate.

Danish climate researchers are currently fixing their gaze on Sumatra in Indonesia. Here lie the remains of the Toba volcano, which 74,000 years ago erupted in what was to become the largest volcanic eruption on Earth in the last two million years.

Last week, Michael Storey of Roskilde University published a study, which dated the eruption with hitherto unseen precision: the volcano erupted 73,880 years ago.

Оспаривается главным образом объем потопа, т. е. его всемирность. Кроме того, оспариваются и частности, например, существование Ноева ковчега, возможность помещения в нем всех животных и др. Однако все ученые-геологи признают несомненность какой-то огромной геологической катастрофы, связанной с наводнением или обледенением. Сомнения возникают лишь во всемирности этой катастрофы и в ее длительности. Геология противопоставляет потопу гипотезу так называемого «ледникового периода», считая этот геологический феномен более древним, более продолжительным и более всеобъемлющим.

Avalon

Avalon (probably from the Welsh word afal, meaning apple) is a legendary island featured in the Arthurian legend. It first appears in Geoffrey of Monmouth's 1136 pseudohistorical account Historia Regum Britanniae ("The History of the Kings of Britain") as the place where King Arthur's sword Excalibur (Caliburnus) was forged and later where Arthur was taken to recover from his wounds after the Battle of Camlann. Avalon was associated from an early date with mystical practices and people such as Morgan le Fay.

Pristine moon crater could help unlock secrets of impacts

Scientists trying to understand the evolution of impact craters on Earth and other rocky bodies have found a good case study on the moon.

Researchers are focusing on Linne Crater, which lies in the moon's Mare Serenitatis region. Linne is just 1.4 miles (2.2 kilometers) wide, but it's extremely young — having formed just 10 million years or so ago — and beautifully preserved.

Surprising 'Mini' Supermassive Black Hole Found in Unlikely Home

Using NASA's Chandra X-Ray space telescope, astronomers have discovered one of the smallest supermassive black holes in middle of an unlikely host galaxy.

The little monster was spotted in NGC 4178, a spiral galaxy about 55 million light-years from Earth that is quite flat and lacks a concentration or bulge of stars at its center.

Theoretical models had predicted that bulges are necessary for supermassive black holes to form and grow. But the new observations from NGC 4178 and four other bulgeless galaxies where black holes have previously been found challenge these assumptions and suggest more than one mechanism is at work in forming supermassive black holes. Researchers have speculated that these behemoths could feed on the disks of galaxies or the haloes of mysterious dark matter that surround galaxies instead of a cluster of stars at the center.

Total Solar Eclipse - Australia 14 November 2012

A total eclipse of the Sun is arguably nature's most spectacular and awe-inspiring phenomenon. Australia will play host to such an event next week and all eyes will be on the horizon overlooking the Coral Sea in Tropical North Queensland as the total solar eclipse casts an incredible shadow across the region on November 14.

Port Douglas and Cairns will be the best places in the world to witness this natural phenomenon and well known Australian astronomer Dave Reneke, writer and publicist for Australasian Science magazine, will be on hand to record it all.

Rare 300 kg meteorite unearthed in Poland

WARSAW: The largest meteorite ever found in Eastern Europe has been discovered by Polish geologists who hope the rare find will provide fresh clues about the composition of the Earth's inner core, they said.

"We know the Earth's core is composed of iron, but we can't study it. Here we have a guest from outer space which is similar in structure and we can easily examine it," Andrzej Muszynski told reporters in Poznan, western Poland, where the find was made public.

"This can broaden our knowledge about the origins of the universe," the geologist said, quoted by the Polish PAP news agency.

Now comes word that the comet's nucleus has taken the next step in its relationship with Mother Nature. 

Solar system’s birth record revised

Some 4.567 billion years ago, our solar system’s planets spawned from an expansive disc of gas and dust rotating around the sun. While similar processes are witnessed in younger solar systems throughout the Milky Way, the formative stages of our own solar system were believed to have taken twice as long to occur. 

Now, new research lead by the Centre for Star and Planet Formation at the Natural History Museum of Denmark, University of Copenhagen, suggests otherwise. Indeed, our solar system is not quite as special as once believed.

Поселение, раскопанное в окрестностях города Провадия (Варненская область, Болгария), состояло из двухэтажных домов, мощных оборонительных стен, улицы, некрополя и сооружений производственного и ритуального характера, датируемых радиоуглеродным методом 4700–4200 годами до н. э., то есть эпохой поздней бронзы.

Farthest Supernova Yet Marked Death of Very Massive Star

Astronomers are reaching ever further back in time, seeking events from the earliest days of the universe. Now, the discovery of the farthest (and thus oldest) supernova ever seen is raising hopes that astronomers will soon detect the explosive deaths of the first stars to form after the universe's birth. These stars forged the first heavy elements, which helped create smaller and longer-lived stars like our own sun.

The earliest stars looked different from modern stars. The big bang produced only three light elements—hydrogen, helium, and a little lithium—but today, stars form in gas clouds that also contain heavier elements such as carbon and oxygen. These elements radiate away enough energy to eventually cool the clouds. When the clouds cool, they fragment into smaller clumps that collapse to spawn a plethora of mostly small stars.

Darren Aronofsky's biblical epic Noah, starring Russell Crowe and Emma Watson, may be the most high-profile film industry casualty of Superstorm Sandy.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, the exterior sets for Noah – including the 450ft-long ark – were constructed directly in the storm's path in Oyster Bay on Long Island Sound; the damage to the area has made it impossible to fully assess what has survived Sandy's impact. The $115m budget film was due to have finished shooting on 9 November, but this will be pushed back as the production has been shut down since Sunday 28 October. (It is due to restart on Thursday 1 November.) However, studio Paramount is confident no delay to its planned release date of 28 March 2013 will occur, as any losses will be covered by insurance.

Arheologii au descoperit mormantul regelui K'utz Chman, un preot despre care se crede ca a domnit in jurul anului 700 i.e.n., la Tak'alik Ab'aj, in regiunea Retalhuleu din vestul Guatemalei. Decorat cu multe bijuterii din jad si alte artefacte, acest sit este cel mai vechi mormant regal maya descoperit pana in prezent.
