What is a Wormhole?

 A wormhole is a theoretical passage through space-time that could create shortcuts for long journeys across the universe. Wormholes are predicted by the theory of general relativity. But be wary: wormholes bring with them the dangers of sudden collapse, high radiation and dangerous contact with exotic matter.

In 1935, physicists Albert Einstein and Nathan Rosen used the theory of general relativity to propose the existence of "bridges" through space-time. These paths, called Einstein-Rosen bridges or wormholes, connect two different points in space-time, theoretically creating a shortcut that could reduce travel time and distance.

Big Bang’s afterglow shows universe is 80 million years older than scientists first thought

ARIS — A new examination of what is essentially the universe’s birth certificate allows astronomers to tweak the age, girth and speed of the cosmos, more secure in their knowledge of how it evolved, what it’s made of and its ultimate fate.

Sure, the universe suddenly seems to be showing its age, now calculated at 13.8 billion years — 80 million years older than scientists had thought. It’s got about 3 percent more girth — technically it’s more matter than mysterious dark energy — and it is expanding about 3 percent more slowly.

Teoria cuantică, dincolo de spaţiu şi timp

O echipă internaţională de cercetători din Elveţia, Belgia, Spania şi Singapore a propus un experiment care ne-ar putea obliga să facem o alegere între două extreme, nonlocalitatea şi încălcarea teoriei relativităţii a lui Einstein, pentru a descrie Universul.

Propunerea este publicată în revista Nature Physics şi are la bază ceea ce oamenii de ştiinţă numesc „inegalitatea influenţei ascunse” (hidden influence inequality). Această inegalitate scoate în evidenţă felul în care predicţiile cuantice pun la încercare cea mai bună descriere a naturii spaţiului şi timpului pe care o avem la dispoziţie în prezent, teoria relativităţii a lui Einstein.

Abhas Mitra,singurul savant care a indraznit sa-i demonstreze lui Hawking ca teoria lui este gresita, marginalizat de lumea ştiinţifică

Abhas Mitra este seful sectiei de Astroficiza Teoretica de la Insitutul de cercetare Atomica Bhabha(BARC) din Mumbai, India. Dincolo de propriile sale cercetari, savantul a atras atentia lumii stiintei dupa ce a contrazis o teorie a lui Stephen Hawking.

In urma cu peste 30 de ani, celebrul fizician Stephen Hawking a publicat teoria sa despre Gaurile Negre din spatiu. Potrivit acesteia, ciudatele "gauri" distrugeau absolut tot ce intra in raza lor gravitationala, inclusiv lumina si informatia, adica baza materiei.

Big Bang and religion mixed in Cern debate

Some of Europe's most prominent scientists have opened a debate with philosophers and theologians over the origins of everything.

The event, in Geneva, Switzerland, is described as a search for "common ground" between religion and science over how the Universe began.

It will focus on the Big Bang theory.

Punctul dincolo de care nu mai există întoarcere: astronomii au reuşit să măsoare raza unei găuri negre

În astronomie, „graniţa de la care nu mai există întoarcere” marchează distanţa - faţă de gaura neagră - dincolo de care forţa gravitaţională este atât de puternică, încât nimic nu mai scăpa, nici măcar lumina. Totul este atras - fără posibilitate de întoarcere - către gaura neagră.

Este o premieră în lumea ştiinţifică: o echipă de astronomi de la Haystack Observatory, aparţinând de Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), a măsurat raza unei găuri negre din centrul unei galaxii îndepărtate - distanţa până la care materia se poate apropia de gaura neagră fără a fi "înghiţită" de aceasta.

Астрономы впервые измерили основание джета черной дыры

Ученые получили рекордно четкое изображение сверхмассивной черной дыры в центре галактики M87 и измерили основание ее джета. Работа опубликована в журнале Science, а ее краткое описание можно прочитать на сайтах Массачусетского технологического института, NatureNews и ScienceNow.

Исследование проводилось с помощью четырех радиотелескопов, расположенных в Калифорнии, Аризоне и на Гавайях. В ходе работы они были фактически объединены в единый прибор - интерферометр со сверхдлинным базисом. Благодаря тщательной настройке радиотелескопов, ученым удалось рассмотреть близкие окрестности черной дыры с беспрецедентной точностью.

Dark Energy Really IS Real

Our universe is a mysterious place. Only 4 percent or so is made up of the ordinary matter we see around us, including all those galaxies filled with stars. The rest, physicists believe, is made of up weakly interacting dark matter, and a mysterious substance called dark energy that is causing the cosmos to expand at an accelerating rate.

At least, that's the working hypothesis, and it seems to fit the data, although there are scientists who question its existence and tout alternatives to explain that accelerating expansion.

Big Bang este contestat, fiind probabil mai mult "Big Chill"

Se poate ca Universul să fi început mai degrabă printr-un mare îngheţ (Big Chill) decât printr-o mare explozie (Big Bang), potrivit unui nou studiu australian.

O echipă de fizicieni teoretici crede că fisurile din cristale, cum ar fi cele de gheaţă, ne pot ajuta să înţelegem cum a luat fiinţă universul.

"Filosofii antici greci s-au întrebat din ce era formată materia: era formată dintr-o substanţă continuă, sau din atomi individuali?", a declarat autorul principal al studiului, James Quach, de la Universitatea din Melbourne, într-un comunicat de presă. "Cu un microscop foarte puternic, noi ştim acum că materia este formată din atomi."

Einstein discovered that gravity is not a force but a curvature

Albert Einstein called it “the happiest thought” of his life.

It was almost certainly the most revolutionary — and that, in the case of Einstein, is saying a lot.

At the time, the young scientist was struggling to broaden the framework of his special theory of relativity, which explains the behaviour of bodies in constant motion with respect to each other but does not account for acceleration, deceleration or the effects of gravity.

Ce a fost inainte de Big Bang? Exista universuri paralele?

Huge Everett III, in 1954, afirma ca exista universuri paralele ca al nostru, toate fiind legate de el. In toate aceste universuri lucrurile se petrec diferit de al nostru. De exemplu, intr-unul oamenii au disparut deja, in altul razboaiele au finaluri diferite, specii disparute in universul nostru au evoluat diferit in alte universuri. Dar toate ,vedem, sunt legate, doar evenimentele se petrec diferit.

Satellites watch stellar death throes

Astronomers think they have seen the flare of a dying star being eviscerated by a black hole. The signal, spotted by three different satellites, could shed light on the relationship between the smaller black holes seen in our own galaxy and the supermassive ones in distant reaches of the Universe.

The stellar victim was first seen1 in 2011 by Swift, a NASA satellite designed to spot bursts of high-energy photons known as γ-rays. For more than a month, Swift watched a signal from a distant galaxy, which eventually faded from view. Subsequent analysis showed that the γ-rays probably came from a star being ripped to pieces by a previously unknown black hole (see 'The awakening of a cosmic monster').

Henri Poincaré: the unlikely link between Einstein and Picasso

Today, 17 July 2012, is the centenary of the death of the great French polymath Henri Poincaré, once described as the "last of the universalists". His achievements span mathematics (he set the basis for chaos theory), physics (his mathematical methods are still used in studying elementary particles), philosophy (his framework for exploring scientific theories is still controversial) and the psychology of creativity (he studied the workings of the unconscious).
