Steaua din centrul imagini se numește „U” din constelația Camelopardalis (Girafa) și a fost ca Soarele.

Peste câteva miliarde de ani, Soarele va fi ca ea.

Stelele ca Soarele transformă, prin procesul de fuziune nucleară, hidrogenul în heliu și, după ce se termină hidrogenul, heliul în carbon. Pentru fiecare transformare este nevoie de o creștere în temperatură care se obține prin colapsarea nucleului, generat de forța de atracție a acestuia care la rândul ei depinde de masă. Dacă masa nu este prea mare (cum este cazul stelelor ca Soarele) procesul de fuziune se oprește la carbon.

Geoffrey of Monmouth: making fact out of fiction

For hundreds of years the standard history of Britain was the one supplied by an obscure teacher, writer, cleric - and, later, priest - of dubious Welsh connections. His name was Geoffrey of Monmouth and his words were believed implicitly, from the time of their creation in the 12th century right down to the days of Queen Elizabeth.

Only much later did it become clear that Geoffrey's version of British history came from a range of different sources. These included a ninth century Welsh book of history (written in both Latin and Welsh), the work of monks like Bede and Gildas, the poems of several Welsh bards - and, in particular, his own rather vivid imagination.

From the mess tent, we can hear huge boulders crashing through rapids half a kilometer away. The boulders sometimes sound like approaching footsteps, and as we’re all just a tiny bit nervous about an unlikely polar bear visit, conversations trail off and we listen.

In the four years our camp has existed on this glacial river, more meltwater is spilling out from beneath Leverett Glacier than we’ve ever seen. What’s more, the river has spilled over its banks and is now eroding a glacial moraine near our camp that was likely pushed there in the 1700’s during the Little Ice Age. It’s only June and the river is still rising.

Ultima fază a ciclului de viaţă al unei stele poate fi tumultuos.

Stelele cu mase mari se dilată sau chiar explodează. De obicei, tot ce rămâne în urma unei stele disipate sunt corpuri ceresti bizare.

Atunci când rezerva de hidrogen din centrul unei stele se epuizează, minimul de energie rezultată duce la scăderea presiunii interne. Miezul stelei se contractă sub propria forţă gravitaţională şi devine mai cald. Dacă nucleul este suficient de fierbinte, heliul se transformă în carbon şi oxigen şi, pentru o vreme, continuă să producă energie.

Lacul se afla la o inaltime de 3.811 metri, in muntii Anzi, fiind cel mai inalt navigabil de pe glob.

Amazoanele din Dahomey, gata să ucidă pentru rege

Neînfricate, cu mult sânge rece, bine antrenate – aşa sunt descrise singurele amazoane atestate cu documente din istoria Terrei. Au făcut parte din armata Regatului Dahomey timp de mai bine de 150 de ani si i–au uimit pe europeni cu vitejia şi ferocitatea lor. Şi au rămas consemnate în istorie drept amazoanele din Sparta neagră.

În urmă cu peste 350 de ani a început povestea amazoa­nelor din Dahomey, singurele amazoane atestate documentar din istorie. Armata femeilor războinice din vestul Africii nu a ajuns la celebritatea cunoscută de amazoanele din „Iliada”, deşi faptele lor neînfricate şi pline de sânge ar fi putut sta la baza multor opere literare sau cinematografice.

Fenomene stranii - DROGURI DE CĂLĂTORIT IN TIMP

LSD 25: acid lisergic, alcaloid extras din cornul-de-secară. Este de 7.000 de ori mai activ decît mescalina. Produce euforie sau depresie, în funcţie de doze şi temperament, halucinaţii strălucitor colorate, accelerarea mişcării şi a timpului, precum rularea unui film cu 100 de imagini/secundă; distorsionarea imaginilor, sentiment de putere, nebunie.

Aceste plante şi aceste droguri sînt metagnomigene (produc clarviziune). Ele erau numite pe vremuri „ierburile profeţilor”. 

Angkor Wat and the Ancient Cambodians

From Bangkok I was going to take the train up to Chang Mai and then though Laos and Vietnam and then end in Cambodia and fly to China, but then I realized that Siem Reap is very close to Bangkok. If you were able to drive straight through it would only take about 5 and a half hours to drive. So I booked a bus ticket to go there from my hostel. 

Apparently many people travel this path from Bangkok to Siem Reap. I had read on some travel web sites that there is a scam at the border where the hostel buses drop you at a restaurant some unknown distance from the border and then over charge you for your visa.
