The secrets of a lost city

VAST stacks of sandstone loom over the arid valley of Wadi Musa like giant handfuls of sun-baked clay. But even in this parched landscape, there are places where the sun casts no light.

Walls 200m high keep the Siq permanently cast in shadow  - it's as though the long, narrow canyon passes through the dark heart of the mountain itself. Utterly silent at dawn, there is not even a bird's chirrup to accompany solitary footsteps along its patchwork floor of rock and sand.

Southern Africa: Mapungubwe - South Africa's Lost City of Gold

One thousand years ago, Mapungubwe in Limpopo province was the centre of the largest kingdom in the subcontinent, where a highly sophisticated people traded gold and ivory with China, India and Egypt.

The Iron Age site, discovered in 1932 but hidden from public attention until only recently, was declared a World Heritage site by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (Unesco) in July 2003.

Lost City of Atlantis

I am here to start a topic of the 4,000 year old Lost City of Atlantis.

People believe that this mythical place was found in Spain & Alaska, my question is was this city this big to be found in both Spain & or Alaska some also say that this amazing city was brought down by a Tsunami then another person brought up this topic again saying that the city was brought down by the worlds biggest volcano that irrupted.

Now whether or not these two topics are true or made to be true why has the government tryd to find this lost city, if this city is suppose to be the greatest city ever made with all these statues ever made that are so calld still standing under the sea/sand of this world what is stopping them from searching for the whole city instead of saying they have found some of it.

Lost City Of Atlantis Not Found Again

Once a year someone is claiming to be on the trail of Atlantis, a science-fiction city or nation or whatever in which super-smart people from the past were somehow wiped out and took a whole lot of cool technology with them.

Last year, it was at least interestingly supposed to be in Spain.

This year, it was maybe in the Baltic Sea - but if you are also searching for Atlantis make sure you use the right fuzzy language so you don't look silly when it turns out not to be aliens from the past. A "discovery" can be a "strange" and "mysterious" seafloor object and no one will object to that.  Then you just hint it might be Atlantis and hope National Geographic gives you a show.

Has Machu Picchu, The 'Lost City Of The Incas,' Become A Victim Of Its Own Success?

The president of Peru announced plans Wednesday to build an airport near the city of Cusco, base camp for the pre-Columbian ruins of Machu Picchu, in order to boost tourism to the surrounding region.

President Ollanta Humala said the $460 million facility would replace Velazco Astete Airport, which is only capable of handling limited daytime flights and has cost Peru key international airline links, including many with the United States.

Hiking Ciudad Perdida - The Lost City

While most hikers and outdoor adventure enthusiasts head straight for the majesty of Machu Picchu or the wonder of Patagonia, they often miss out on one of the most wild and spectacular areas in South America.

Ciudad Perdida, also known as the Lost City, is found in the Sierra Nevada Mountains just outside of Santa Marta in Colombia. It is a remote area, only accessible by hiking and the trek takes 5-6 days through ancient paths in the jungle, over 25km of coca plantations, across numerous rivers and finally 1200 steep steps to the top.

Have archaeologists found the legendary lost city of gold?

During his conquest of the Americas, Hernan Cortes learned of a mysterious lost city adorned with golden statues and vast riches. Cuidad Blanco, known as the birthplace of the Aztec god Quetzalcoatl, was said to lie hidden somewhere amidst the dense jungle of Honduras’ Mosquito Coast. And as the legend grew, many explorers searched for it in vain. But now, scientists using a high tech method known as “laser mapping” believe they may have discovered the remains of the mythological “White City.”

The lost city of the Incas

Coming to Machu Picchu felt like a pilgrimage of sorts. We'd been making our way towards it for 2 days now, and this morning, we still had a 20-minute bus ride separating us from these ancient ruins.

We walked out of our hotel just after 7 am and were relieved to see the sun peeking out from behind the mountains around us. Our prayers had been answered and it looked like we were going to have at least a couple of hours of blue sunny skies before clouds and possibly rain set in. There was no line at the bus station, as the really hard-core people had already gone up before dawn. The road up to Machu Picchu is a hair-raising one. In most places, it's just wide enough for one bus, so there were a couple of times when we had to go backwards to make room for a bus coming back down. In addition, the route is realy steep as we gained over 400 m (1200 ft) from Aguas Callientes. The person with a window seat next to me was pretty much staring down at the abyss below us.
