Who Were the Etruscans?

Answer:

The Etruscans, who lived in Etruria, were known as Tyrrhenians by the Greeks. They were at their height in Italy from the 8th to the 5th century B.C. Herodotus (c. 450 B.C.) reports, as a theory of their origin, that the Etruscans came from Asia Minor. Recent work on DNA in cattle suggests Herodotus may have been right, although some still consider them indigenous to the Italic peninsula.

Agamemnon in Herodotus and Thucydides: Exploring the historical uses of amythological paradigm

This paper explores the use of the myth of Agamemnon in Herodotus and Thucydides.I argue that the deployment of Agamemnon in their works is shaped by, and sheds additionallight on, the historians’ attitude toward myth (and its use in rhetoric), their narrative aims andhistorical outlook.

Herodotus’ readiness to embrace myth in both narrative and speeches, hisrepresentation of complex motivation, his description of the conflict between the Greeks andthe Persians, and his panhellenic outlook, influence the function of Agamemnon: as king of Sparta and the leader of the Greeks in the Trojan War, he reflects the idealistic and pragmaticmotivation of the Spartans in the context of the Persian Wars.

Herodot Despre TRACI

HERODOTUS

Today, we visit Herodotus. The University of Houston’s College of Engineering presents this series about the machines that make our civilization run, and the people whose ingenuity created them.

From twenty five hundred years ago, Herodotus said these words:

Here are presented the results of the enquiry carried out by Herodotus of Halicarnassus. The purpose is to prevent the traces of human events from being erased by time, and to preserve the fame of the important and remarkable achievements produced by both Greeks and non-Greeks ...

Strange Accounts: The World of Hyperborea

Less well-known than Atlantis, the continent of Hyperborea was even more ancient and fantastic. As with Atlantis, Hyperborea was first mentioned by the ancient Greek philosophers. For them, the place was real, not legend, and since that time many researchers have joined in the quest for this lost land.

The oldest mention of Atlantis is found in the Epigones, an epic history of ancient Greece. Although the author has been forgotten, we do know it was written in the 8th Century B.C. Hyperborea is also mentioned in another work of the same period, this one by the celebrated poet Hesiod.

The Persian Wars Complete, Herodotus

THESE are the researches of Herodotus of Halicarnassus, which he publishes, in thehope of thereby preserving from decay the remembrance of what men have done, and of  preventing the great and wonderful actions of the Greeks and the Barbarians from losingtheir due meed of glory; and withal to put on record what were their grounds of feuds.

According to the Persians best informed in history, the Phoenicians began toquarrel. This people, who had formerly dwelt on the shores of the Erythraean Sea, havingmigrated to the Mediterranean and settled in the parts which they now inhabit, began atonce, they say, to adventure on long voyages, freighting their vessels with the wares of Egypt and Assyria.
